Historical Sights
Be sure not to miss the Tangier Island Historical Marker erected in 1948 by the Virginia Conservation Commission. The marker is located on Main Ridge Road near Ponderosa Lane.
Other memorable stops are the Swain Memorial United Methodist Church built in 1899 and the Connorton House once home to Sergeant Bud Connorton. On Sunday April 11, 1920, Sergeant Connorton shot and wounded 17 year old Roland Parks. He was trying to enforce a town ordinance that forbade loafing on store porches and streets on Sunday. The law required residents to be “in church during the hours of service or in their homes.” Parks alleged he was simply getting ice cream to take to his invalid mother.
The Peter Dise House is also of interest. It’s one of the oldest homes on the island and was moved from the “Uppards,” the now unoccupied marsh north of the harbor.
Museum
Learn how the British forces used Tangier as a base during the War of 1812. Learn about Tangier’s special role in the history of aviation, it’s unique language and how islanders face the challenges of a rising Bay, a shrinking island and a dwindling population. Admission is $3 per person. Military personnel, children under 11 years of age and islanders are admitted FREE.
Fishing
Late September through November presents an excellent time for fishing throughout the Tangier Sound. Striped Bass, Flounder, Trout and Red Drum Bass are just a few types of fish plentiful in these waters. Charter and head boat fishing is available.
Sunsets
There are no bars, dance halls or recreational facilities on the island so nightlife is rather limited however Tangier is home to some of the most outstanding sunsets you’ll ever see.
